My Chosen TV Series: True Blood

I decided to choose True Blood are my chosen TV series because I was intrigued by the supernatural world and how many different creatures there would be, from vampires to fairies to werewolves. I didn't want to limit myself to just vampires of just zombies so I thought this series would give me many options and ideas. True Blood is set in the gothic town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. The series is about how a telepathic girl meets a male vampire and how they he introduces her to a new supernatural world. The series started in 2008 and the last series was in 2014. I am basing my characters on the first series, meaning I am going to create two characters that I think would fit in well with the setting, colouring and overall feel of the series.

Target Audience

The target audience for this TV series is over 18 as it's main selling point is sex appeal. Because of the more mature audience, the series can explore more complex themes that would only be appreciated by an adult audience. All the characters are very attractive and sexualised in different ways, from the way they talk to their physical appearance. The series explores sexual complications between vampires and humans. The series has consistently kept to around 4 million viewers per series which shows it continues to grip the viewers, making them want more. The show's producer, Alan Ball, says 'Vampires are sex', which would make sense as all the vampires in True Blood are very sexualised, for example the women are in suggestive clothing. "Women love the story-telling and the romance," believes Ball, "and men love the sex and violence." However the viewing figures show that it is predominantly woman who watch it. The struggle of the fictional vampire rights movement has been interpreted by many as a reference to the real world struggle of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual movement) and therefore attracts a large audience from that group. True Blood could be described as something of a hybrid genre. It uses elements and themes from the fantasy, horror, drama, crime and romance genres of film. People who have an interest in fantasy would be drawn to the show by the use of vampires and other supernatural creatures. Older Twilight fans that are a fan of horror, tension and thrills may also be attracted. Drama fans would also have something to enjoy in the show in the way characters interacted with one another. The romance comes from Sookie and Bill the vampire and could be compared with Romeo and Juliet because of their attraction to one another despite the fact that society would frown upon their relationship.
